About Us...

Welcome to Jazafira Rhodesian Ridgebacks!

My name is Emma and I live in the Southern suburbs of Adelaide with my 4 lovely Rhodesian Ridgebacks.  I am originally from the UK, but I emigrated to Australia in 1999.

Many years ago, I met my first Ridgeback, Beth who belonged to my brother’s girlfriend (now wife).  I was absolutely fascinated by the ridge on her back as I had never seen anything like it before!  Unfortunately, Beth passed away and I didn't meet another Ridgeback until 2004 when my brother’s wife, persuaded him to welcome a new Ridgey into their home.  I was in the UK on holiday just after their lovely boy Taz arrived and I fell madly in love with him.  This was the start of my love affair with Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

When I returned to Australia, I started looking for my own Ridgeback and I finally found her in
2006.  The day I brought my gorgeously beautiful girl Kizzy ~ Caprivi Yangu Kisura ~ into my home, was the day my life changed for the better.   There is something about a Ridgeback that you will never find in any other dog and once you’ve shared your life with one, you will always be smitten.

Kizzy and I lived together with two Border Collies until I decided to move back to the
UK in 2011.  Unfortunately, both Border Collies passed away before I could fly them over so I was only able to take Kizzy with me.  While I was overseas, I chanced upon a photo of the most magnificent dog I had ever seen.  It was a Ridgeback called Yogi from Zejak, a breeder in Hampshire who had strong Veldtkammer lines in their dogs.

The Zejak / Veldtkammer type is quite different to those in Australia as they have a rich, dark red wheaten coat, that stays true to some of the earlier lines in Africa such as the famous Gazeley kennel, started by Jack and Helen Bocock in 1947.  In recent years, the darker coat has become very popular in Europe and Veldtkammer have become top breed record holders in the UK.  In fact, they are the only kennel to have been awarded Best of Breed at the prestigious Crufts championship dog show for 4 consecutive years.
Yogi was so stunning I decided that I would move heaven and earth to have one of his puppies – so that is exactly what I did! Jackie from Zejak agreed for her gorgeous boy Jazz ~ Neut Ch Zejak Zahor ~ to join our family and she also suggested that I enter him in some conformation shows.  It wasn't something I had considered before, but it sounded like fun!  When I returned to Australia in 2013, I entered Jazz into his first show and we have been showing ever since.

Despite already having two gorgeous Ridgeys, there was still a piece of the puzzle missing – our beautiful girl Safi ~
Ch Shakuru Pure Pleasure ~ from Shakuru Rhodesian Ridgebacks .  Safi joined us in 2014 and became a star in the show ring and a much loved part of our brood.  Finally, we  welcomed Suni ~ Jazafira Sunnyside Up ~ into the world in 2016 and she is our first-born home bred pup who has stolen our hearts as well as most of the foam from the sofa cushions!   Suni's brother, our handsome chap Oscar ~ Ch Jazafira Cockeyed Optimist ~  lives with an amazing family in Melbourne and he regularly enters shows with his Dad, Opie.

I have been very involved in the breed since returning from the UK, including being a Committee member of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of SA for 3.5 years.  When I'm not training, showing, walking or cuddling up in bed with my dogs, I work from home as a Canine Myofunctional Therapist and Dog Behaviour Trainer, specialising in medication-free pain management and reactive and anxious dogs. It is my priority to breed healthy, happy and sound dogs that are strong to type and have superb temperaments.  It is for this reason that I use the Puppy Culture model as it provides an amazing foundation for our Jazafira puppies to grow and mature into fantastic members of the community.  I was the first Rhodesian Ridgeback breeder in Australia to raise a litter of puppies using the Puppy Culture protocols and the first Australian breeder to be formally recognised on the Puppy Culture World Breeder Map .  I therefore place a keen focus on implementing early neurological stimulation, socialisation and enrichment strategies that prepare our brood for life with their new families and beyond.  Just ask any of our puppy people whether they notice the difference and you'll be met with a resounding 'yes'!!

Words cannot describe how devoted I am to this magnificent breed and my dogs mean more to me than anything else in this world.  Every choice I make is therefore underpinned by great love and respect for the breed – because out of love, comes perfection…
